Combine extraordinary gray whale watching encounters on the remote shores of Magdalena Bay with hiking and farm to table cuisine at the secluded eco-ranch of Rancho Cacachilas set deep in the desert sierra.
This trip starts off by traveling to the Pacific Coast and remote shores of Magdalena Bay. The gray whales migrate here to court, mate, give birth and frolic in these protected waters, often just in front of your bay view tent!
Upon arrival we will settle into our luxury bayside beach camp, complete with walk-in tents, cots, pads and pillows for some “glamping”. Our spectacular camp setting is ideal for watching whales as they frolic in the bay. For close encounters of this magnificent mammal we have the opportunity to board motorized boats twice daily and take a short ride into the bay where whales abound. These boats are skillfully and sensitively operated by local boatmen who have many years of experience working with our guests.
Other activities from camp include exploring the spectacular wind sculptured dunes and remote Pacific Coast with its pounding surf or guided kayaking excursions into the extensive mangrove estuaries teaming with bird life. In the evening our naturalist guides present slide shows on the local flora and fauna with a special focus on gray whale natural history and behavior.
From Magdalena Bay we return to La Paz for a night at our hotel to shower and enjoy some fine dining. Our next adventure takes us to an eco-ranch where their own goats, chickens and gardens provide a plethora of fresh, locally prepared foods. Activities on this private ranch include hiking through a mountainous seaside desert environment combined with culinary exploration such as sampling hand crafted artisan cheeses paired with fines wines. Camp is comprised of large walk-in canvas tents placed in beautifully secluded locations, some with views of the beautiful blue Sea of Cortez. The night sky from this remote mountain desert is simply breath taking.
After hiking and dining at the ranch for a couple days you’ll head back to La Paz for a lovely evening exploring this vibrant seaside town.
Don’t miss this opportunity to visit a couple of Baja’s most wild places and enjoy unique wildlife encounters while camping in comfort at our luxury safari camp accommodations.
